The smartphone as a reason for sleep disorders?

Those who sleep not enough or badly for months or even years will feel at some point the effects of the sleep disturbances on their body: from constant tiredness, irritability and bad concentration to a weakened immune system, overweight and even high blood pressure. What you can do against it and which role the mobile phone plays in it.
Not being able to sleep well sometimes – most people might know that – either due to excitement or due to a problem that is plaguing you. Those who sleep too little or badly for months or even years will also notice at some point the effects of the sleep disturbances on their body: from constant tiredness, irritability and bad concentration to a weakened immune system, overweight and even high blood pressure. Sleeping pills are no good idea here because they might provide a better sleep temporarily, but the reason for the sleep disorders remains. That’s why, in the long run, the only help is to tackle the roots of the problem. But what are actually the reasons of the sleep disturbances?

Medical doctors state as most frequent possible factors for sleep disorders:

  • Organic reasons like chronic pains or a nightly urge to urinate
  • Psychological factors like worries, stress and general inner unrest
  • Life style: too little exercise, unhealthy diet, increased consumption of coffee and alcohol
  • Irregular day-night rhythm, for example due to shift work
  • Increasing radiation exposure

If you suffer from sleep disorders, you will not be able to avoid dealing with it and finding the reason for it on your own or by talking to your doctor. Consulting a doctor will be necessary sooner or later anyway, because meanwhile it is proved by various studies that chronic sleep disorders can lead to a weakening of the immune system, overweight and subsequently even to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

In the search for the cause other factors should be considered as well, which are being stated more often with the growing digitalization as a reason for sleep disturbances:

  • Too much display light of laptop, tablet computer and smartphone
  • Check quickly the mails or send a message via WhatsApp before going to bed – that’s what a lot of people do. But this can lead to problems when you want to fall asleep because the blue part of the display light disturbs the secretion of the sleep hormone melatonin – and without this hormone we can’t fall asleep. That’s why we should avoid using smartphones and other mobile devices about one hour before going to bed.

  • Electromagnetic radiation
  • Not visible, but always there: In every building electromagnetic fields, which we don’t perceive but which affect our body, are generated by power lines. If high frequency radiation – from the WLAN network, the tablet computer or the mobile phone – is added, it means an even higher permanent stress for our body; so to speak, we are a live wire. So, it’s no surprise when we can’t sleep at night.


Turning off the WLAN router or the smartphone during the night is a first step. The radiation, however, can even get effortlessly through walls so that we are still exposed to the neighbours’ radiation or WLAN network – and above all to nearby radio masts, which are approaching literally more and more and to an unprecedented extent by the expansion of the 5G network.
